It seems that everywhere you go, there is a good chance that music will be there. You go for a quick drive with your best friends and someone is always ready to plug in and play. You go to the store and there is some kind of family friendly music setting the mood for a family environment. Music is quite literally everywhere. It helps people, motivates people, makes people cry, scream, laugh, smile, and show just about any other form of emotion you can think of. There is all types of music that seems to capture a certain mood too. You have your mosh pitting punk rock jumping people all the way to the hands to the heavens, tears running down their face,Trance music kind of people. The first time I really dove into understanding music I did not get up from my chair for around 8 hours. I didn’t eat, go to the bathroom, or even talk to anyone. When I finally called it a night around 3 a.m., I knew that trying to understand music was my life work. This was about 2 years ago so with the knowledge I have now I will try to tell you my interpretation of why music is so amazing. I will be talking about electronic music sense this is the genre that touches my heart the most. Let’s start with my ideas of music from when I first started to dive into electronic music and the EDM scene.
What I see music does for people in this scene is life changing. All though psychedelic drugs and MDMA can be a big part of change within someone, a common phrase you hear is “you have to be in the right environment”. Without the emotion packed music, the change would have no platform to take place. A listener goes to a show of an artist they really like because that music speaks to them and they know that something great will happen at that show. All though people do go for the crazy light shows and heavy drops, I believe people go to these kind of shows for some kind of self growth. You can just feel it in the environment when you decide to go to one. That’s why the artist is nothing without it’s fans. Music needs a listener to be appreciated. The crowds at EDM shows create this crazy energy in the venue. The music almost creates a place for people to come and be themselves without having to worry about judgment. The music comes on and you can feel goosebumps shoot all over your body. The time has finally come. The adrenaline and serotonin starts to release as you feel your body start to get lighter and your heart heavier. A breath of fresh air. Smiles everywhere around you. You feel like you are home. All of these amazing feelings in your heart, and mind, because of music. With a psychology background, I look at music in a therapeutic sense.
You see people showing emotions that are frowned upon or seen as weird to a lot of people. Music encourages you to dance out your problems. Even those who just bob their head find it therapeutic. Why is this? I truly believe music was made to help people because that's how it was created. This of course is just a John Hohnhorst theory but I think music was made as an outlet. Those who make it truly lose themselves in music while making it. Almost in a therapeutic way. At least for me, sometimes it feels like time is non existent. You call it a night of producing and it’s almost like you are stepping back into your body. I could just be a weird producer but that’s how it works for me.
Creating music has a sense of emotion with it which is why we get emotional over music and why it is so powerful. The creator goes into their zone as they create. This zone is the place where their creativity is stored and their true self is waiting to start creating the next heartbreaking melody. This emotion from the creator is then translated through sound which creates a therapeutic feeling for the creator. When someone listens they can then feel the emotion conveyed by the creator. This sound coincides in someone and they feel heard. Once this happens a sense of relief happens because we feel connected to another individual we don’t even know but we are just so happy to know we aren’t alone. That’s why music is so amazing. It brings together people that are feeling somewhat similar about life and gives you a sense of belonging.
All though I am mostly talking about one genre I believe the same things happen in all genres. You just see it in different forms. I think that the music that someone likes, reflects a lot about a person because that music speaks to them and what they are feeling about life. Music has brought so many people together over the years. Music has morphed into something more than just really cool sounds or powerful lyrics. It has turn into an experience. To me, music is so powerful because it not only speaks to another person but also because it has the ability to change someone’s perspective on life, in the matter of minutes.
